In her welcoming address at the 13th IESSA conference and AGM, IESSA president Natasha Nel-Sakharova reminded delegates that the Illumination Engineering Society of South Africa (IESSA) is an independent, non-profit organisation representing the lighting industry in South Africa.

Its mission, she said, is to support the practical implementation of internationally recognised lighting practices in South Africa. The association provides a forum for the exchange of information and contact between those concerned with the different aspects of illumination.

She said IESSA represents the South African lighting industry internationally and thereby acts as the national committee of the International Commission on Illumination (CIE).

This year’s conference, hosted at The River Club Hotel, Cape Town, on 15 – 17 May, included a joint forum on energy-efficient lighting between IESSA and the International Solid-state Lighting Alliance (ISA), supported by the South African National Energy Development Institute (SANEDI).

The ISA is an international, not-for-profit NGO which aims to promote the sustainable development and application of solid-state lighting (SSL) worldwide. Nel-Sakharova said it currently represents about 70% of the output of the global SSL industry and is an international alliance of regional alliances and associations, universities, institutions and companies in the solid-state lighting field.

Topics discussed at the conference included the latest developments and applications of solid-state lighting; lighting technology delivering energy efficiency; contemporary lighting design for interiors and exteriors; modern lighting applications; standards development; measurement standards development; strategy and policy development to support implementation of energy-efficient lighting; global market trends in solid-state lighting; research and development of new lighting technologies; the status and dynamics of energy-efficient lighting in South Africa, and waste management for lighting products.

A total of 24 papers and two keynote addresses were presented at the conference. During a gala dinner hosted at Cape Town’s Wild Fig Restaurant, Kurt Maritz of Maritz Electrical, which sponsored the dinner, stressed the importance of industry associations such as IESSA and the role they play in facilitating collaboration between companies within industry.
