Can poor governance ruin South Africa’s future energy landscape?

  • Alan M

South Africa’s energy landscape has already been ruined by poor governance – the self appointed sole shareholder trying to run the utility. Eskom is quite right not to buy any more wind and solar, until the bids are actually needed, and include their own on-site electricity storage and recovery plant. Once they can provide firm capacity, instead of their need to generate into the grid whenever the wind blows or the sun shines, they will reveal their true costing. Meanwhile the twenty-year contracts Mr Molefe so rightly objected to, remind those with long enough memories, of the Goon Show line: “Hold out your wallet and say after me: Help yourself”.
