Drone for underground mines

Mining Technology Suppliers (MTS) has obtained the rights to distribute an underground mobile scanning system in South Africa. At the core of the system is the lightweight V-Scan3D laser scanner and Clickmox Solutions’ simultaneous localisation and mapping (SLAM) technology. SLAM makes it possible to produce a scanned map in GPS deprived areas using information from the scanner such as from its inertial measurement unit. The system can be mounted on one of several unmanned vehicles, including Inkonova’s Tilt Ranger drone. The system can be used in anything from day-to-day production measurements to mapping dangerous and inaccessible areas. The resulting scan is similar to scans obtained from a series of stationary scans, but with the added safety benefits and improved scan times since it eliminates laborious setting up procedures. It could also be valuable to any mine rescue team. A new collision avoidance system on the drone also reduces operator input and possible pilot error.
