In November 2017, the South African public was offered a glimpse into the country’s high standard of architectural design as the finalists of the 2017 Corobrik-SAIA (South African Institute of Architects) Awards of Merit were showcased at Menlyn Mall, Pretoria.

The awards programme is structured over a period of two years, and conducted in three stages. In the first year Awards for Architecture are presented by the various regional institutes affiliated to SAIA. The Corobrik-SAIA Awards of Merit are bestowed in the second year and thereafter, the Awards for Excellence are announced. The awards recognise good design or a significant contribution in the field of architecture, are open to SAIA members nationwide.

Visitors to the showcase had an opportunity to view the 60 competition entrants to the coveted Award of Merit, to be awarded at a ceremony in May 2018. Contestants comprised registered architects and architectural academics, with each submission poster featuring images and a brief on a building that has been constructed within the last two years.

The adjudication process is conducted by independent and respected professional architects, eminent lay persons with a good understanding of architecture as well as academics from schools of architecture. The adjudication of each entrant is thorough, with regional awards further scrutinised by an independent panel at national level, ensuring a fair assessment of entries.
