IMEESA hosted a Government Certificate of Competency candidate masterclass on 23 May 2015 at the Science Stadium auditorium of the University of the Witwatersrand. The master of ceremonies, ICMEESA third vice-president Eddie Singo, opened the event. In his address, the institution’s president, Brian Clark, emphasised that the event was aimed at candidates who had enrolled for the June 2015 examinations, but will equally benefit candidates who intend writing later. The decision to proceed with the masterclass was taken after consultation with the Department of Labour (DoL) Commission of Examiners for Electrical and Mechanical Certificates of Competency as Engineers – Factories. DoL specialist inspector Matlala Sathekge provided an introduction, followed by DoL examinations commissioner André du Plessis, who focused on the legal examination paper. Sathekge was also supported by Tshepo Mothotsi of the DoL directorate: Electrical and Mechanical Engineering. The legal section of the event was completed by Brian French, a longstanding member of the Minister’s Advisory Council for Occupation Health and Safety. His presentation focused on the Non-national Certificate: Engineering Certificate of Competency, Occupational Health and Safety Act 16 November 2009 examination paper. Jorge Pereira’s presentation focused on power factor corrections and 3-phase transformers.
