The South African Photovoltaic Industry Association (SAPVIA), in its ongoing support for and encouragement of solar PV installations and as part of its PV Greencard initiative, has released a comprehensive guide on how to install a solar PV system.

The booklet, in PDF format, can be downloaded by clicking here.

The guidelines explain the basics of electricity generation, solar PV components, planning and sizing of the solar PV installation. Other general guidelines are presented on working from heights, recurring duties and appropriate example installations.

This therefore presents a detailed overview for everyone who is involved in the planning, installation, operation and maintenance of PV systems.

The solar PV Installation Guidelines are aligned with the National Solar PV Service Technician Qualification and assists the solar PV installer to use international best practices when installing and maintaining grid-tied solar PV systems.

As the planning of off-grid (stand-alone) systems are different in many aspects, a separate guideline will cover these types of installations.

The guide also provides  a practical example which is based on a typical rooftop installation and provides information such as:

  • Number and position of hooks and rails
  • Hook and rail mounting
  • Cable laying and module mounting
  • Module handling hints
  • Inverter installation and AC connection
  • Commissioning
  • The PV GreenCard

The guide also explains electrical basics, the importance of safety when working on a roof; typical electrical faults in PV systems; maintenance requirements and environmental concerns.
