Esri recently published “Understanding GIS: An ArcGIS Pro Project Workbook, Fourth Edition”, a workbook which instructs readers on how to complete a geographic information system (GIS) project from start to finish. It provides instructors with a resource for teaching students how to use GIS for a single project that incorporates real data and uses the most up-to-date spatial analysis methods and technology. To complete their project, readers will use ArcGIS Pro, an ArcGIS Desktop application with advanced 2D and 3D analysis and visualisation capabilities, along with Esri ArcGIS Online, Esri Story Maps apps, United States Census data, and additional municipal data. The book has been updated to be compatible with ArcGIS Pro 2.2. Updates have also been made to the demographic and parcel data, and chapter 9 was rewritten to reflect changes in ArcGIS Online capabilities. The book comes with a 180-day trial of ArcGIS Desktop software. The step-by-step instructions in the nine lessons show readers how to explore the project data, select the data for use in the analysis, build a database, edit data, conduct the analysis, build a model to automate the analysis, make a map to present the results of the analysis, and then share the results in a web map.
