Multidisciplinary rock engineering solution implemented

The iGlobe Group were contracted to develop a rock engineering solution for a well-known coal mining company in Witbank. The goal was to develop a GIS system for surveyors to capture the data and post it into a database environment where the spatial visualisation of features could be used for post processing and future plans. The GIS also had to be user specific. The solution needed to enable staff to design both opencast and underground mining operations in a dynamic environment. Challenges of the project was to consider all the various departments involved (rock engineering, geology, mining, environmental, ventilation, and engineering), as well as related complex tasks for each. Both planned and actual processes had to be captured. Support features were also created to capture updated conditions. Files can be used by CAD users and similar applications, and was completed using Bentley’s Map, MicroStation and ProjectWise software. The solution was also integrated with Esri in order to share the data seamlessly due to the usage of a spatial database.
