The Department of Rural Development and Land Reform (DRDLR) has recently published the National Land Cover Classes and Definitions standards booklet, available for download at www.ngi.gov.za/index.php/news-and-events. The process of the development and updating of National Land Cover classes and definitions standard for South Africa started in 2016 through the South African Group on Earth Observation (SA-GEO) together with national and provincial government departments, local municipalities, academics, state-owned institutions and the private sector. After consultation workshops in all nine provinces, the final draft was submitted to the Minister of Rural Development and Land Reform for approval as prescribed in the South African Spatial Data Infrastructure Act No 54, 2003 (SDI Act). This is the first standard to be approved through the SDI Act since its inception. This standard is not prescriptive and provides a hierarchical structure to achieve the implementation of the South African Spatial Data Infrastructure in all three spheres of government.
