obituary-2014-04Colin Henry Marran was born in Bloemfontein, Free State. He attended Robert Hicks Primary School and the former Pretoria Central Technical College, where he matriculated. He became an apprentice electrician circa 1956 while employed by the then SAR&H. He met his future wife, Robin, in Germiston and they were engaged on Robin’s 21st birthday. He resigned from SAR&H shortly after and was employed as an electrician by the former Germiston Council. Later, Colin started his own business, Professional Lighting Analysts. He served on a number of IESSA technical committees and has presented papers at the society’s annual congresses since the late 1970s. His memory is described best in the words of his friend Izak van Aswegen: “He was a real gentleman. I wish I could be like him. He was always professional, he always smiled.” His brother, John Marran, describes Colin as a “big brother, a friend and a buddy at all times”. Colin is survived by his wife, Robin, their daughter, Katherine and grandchildren Melanie and Dominique.
