South African National Standards (SANS) updates

The following new and revised standards are referenced in legislation

New standards

SANS 27955, Road vehicles – Securing of cargo in passenger cars, station wagons and multi-purpose vehicles – requirements and test methods

Applies to devices for the securing of cargo in passenger cars, station wagons and multi-purpose passenger cars, where the seats directly delimit the loading space. Defines minimum requirements and tests for front and rear seats and partitioning systems, in order to improve the protection of the vehicle occupants against shifting load during a frontal impact. Also defines minimum requirements and tests for lashing points in the above-mentioned vehicles in order to be able to secure a load (luggage or goods) in a reliable and roadworthy way. ICS 43.020; 43.100.

SANS 50200, Method of test for resistance to fire of unprotected small cables for use in emergency circuits.

Specifies the test method for cables designed to have intrinsic resistance to fire and intended for use as emergency circuits for alarm, lighting and communication purposes. ICS 13.220.40; 29.060.20.

Revised standards

SANS 10400-D, The application of the National Building Regulations Part D: Public safety:

Establishes requirements for safety provisions at changes in level, in the design of ramps and driveways, and in access provided to swimming pools and swimming baths. ICS 91.040.01.

SANS 10400-G, The application of the National Building Regulations Part G: Excavations

Establishes requirements for temporary excavations, permanent excavations, and blasting. ICS 91.040.01.

SANS 10400-O, The application of the National Building Regulations Part O: Lighting and ventilation.
Establishes requirements for natural and artificial lighting, and natural and artificial ventilation. ICS 91.040.01.

SANS 60335-1, Household and similar electrical appliances – Safety Part 1: General requirements

Deals with the safety of electrical appliances for household and similar purposes, their rated voltage being not more than 250 V for single phase-phase appliances and 480 V for others. ICS 97.020

SANS 60598-2-20, Luminaires Part 2-20: Particular requirements – Lighting chains. Specifies requirements for lighting chains fitted with series-connected or parallel-connected or a combination of series/parallel connected incandescent lamps for use either indoors or outdoors on supply voltages not exceeding 250 V. ICS 29.140.40
