South African Flameproof Association hosts annual symposium

The South African Flameproof Association, (SAFA) hosted its annual symposium at the Protea Hotel by Marriott OR Tambo on 25 May 2017. The conference, which was very well-attended, started off with a keynote address on the history of the legal requirements pertaining to explosion-proof (Ex) industrial installations by legislative compliance specialist Jaco Swartz. Other presenters represented the Department of Minerals and Energy; Neil Esterhuysen and Associates; Mining and Surface Certification, the SABS; Sasol and GEIA Consulting.

A total of six papers was presented at the one-day event and the exhibitors included CCG Cable Terminations; Eaton; Extronics; Hazleton Pumps; JoynX Cable Couplers; Kama Industries; MASC; Nordland Lighting; Pepperl + Fuchs; Pratley; Proconics and Stahl.

An awards cocktail event was hosted directly after the symposium, and four awards were presented in as many categories.

In the first category, Company of the Year Based on Current Contribution, the award went to CCG Cable Terminations.

The Young Achiever of the Year Award seeks to honour outstanding service to the hazardous (Ex) industry by a candidate under the age of 35. Nominated in this category were Donovan Young, Jaco Venter and Sarieet Theron, who also received the award.

The Most Innovated Product Engineered Solution Award is for candidates who have designed and provided exceptional solutions to the Ex industry by means of design or engineering of a product. The nominated companies were Hazleton Pumps International and CCG Cable Teminations, who received the award.

The Member of the Year based on Current Contribution Award rewards SAFA members who have excelled in contributions towards SAFA as well as the Ex industry during the year. This includes regular attendance and contributions to SAFA meetings and involvement with and contributions to various work groups. The winner in the category was Arthur Cameron of CCG Cable Terminations.

The President’s Award honours lifelong contributions, exceptionally long service, special contributions and regular attendance and contributions to all SAFA meetings. This award went to two recipients, Dr. Johannes Auret from Explolabs and Willa Breedt of the SABS.
