Update on the appointment of base dataset coordinators

Three separate workshops on the appointment of Base Data Set Coordinators were organised by the Directorate: National Spatial Information Framework (NSIF) on behalf of the Data subcommittee of the Committee for Spatial Information (CSI). The workshops were held in Pretoria and the focus was on Base Data Set Coordinators for the following Data Themes: Administrative Boundaries; Cadastre; and Transport. The purpose of the workshop was to familiarise the prospective coordinators with their roles and responsibilities as Base Data Set Coordinators and Base Data Set Custodians.

The outcome of the workshop was ratified at the CSI meeting held 5 September 2018, with the following appointments confirmed:

  • The Office of Chief Surveyor General (OCSG), Department of Rural Development and Land Reform (DRDLR) was appointed as a Base Data Set Coordinator for the theme Administration Boundary 1. Appointments of contributing custodians of datasets within the theme Administrative Boundary will be finalised in due course.
  • The OCSG, DRDLR was appointed as a Base Data Set Coordinator for the theme Cadastre. The metropolitan municipalities are identified as contributing custodians of datasets within the theme Cadastre, with appointments to be finalised soon.
  • The National Department of Transport (NDOT) is appointed as a Base Data Set Coordinator for the theme Transport, with a number of agencies reporting to the NDOT identified as contributing custodians. Appointments of contributing custodians of datasets within the theme Transport will be finalised in due course.

The CSI has concluded the appointment of 10 Base Data Set Coordinators, covering eight of the ten pilot themes (see Table 1).
