SACAC proudly presents a FREE evening talk by Mr T Chipfupa on the topic of Industrial Innovation Funding. Entrepreneurial innovation drives new business creation and corporate innovation strengthens existing business. The South Africa Government has identified innovation as crucial for job creation and enhancing South Africa’s competitiveness in the global economy. A number of government grants and incentives have been established to encourage innovation through research and development. The talk will discuss some of these, such as the Support Program for Industrial Innovation (SPII), the Partners in Industrial Innovation (PII) fund, and the R&D tax deduction allowance as stipulated in Section 11D of the income tax act. Mr Chipfupa is a joint managing director at Cova Advisory & Associates, a consultancy firm that specialises in government grants and incentives. Before founding Cova he was the Deputy Director-General, responsible for the suite of incentives offered by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), and was instrumental in the introduction of a number of their major incentives. This talk is intended to provide some insight into the innovation grants and incentives value chain, and how to identify projects that qualify. Please RSVP before 29 September by clicking the link below.

The Stellenbosch University Synthetic Aperture Radar (SUNSAR) Symposium provides a forum for discussion and sharing of research on the development and application of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imagery in South Africa. SAR is becoming prevalent in South Africa’s earth observation sector, with new applications (and new sensors) being developed in academia, research councils and private industry. SAR imagery is being successfully used in domains such as agriculture, urban monitoring, maritime domain awareness, woody biomass estimation, water body mapping, geohazards etc. With the free availability of Sentinel-1 imagery now a reality, spaceborne radar imagery is becoming more accessible than ever – even to those who are not SAR experts.

Workshop on process data analytics

Type of event: Workshop
Time: 08:30 – 17:00
Venue: Lilliesleaf, Rivonia
Address: 7 George Avenue Rivonia, Johannesburg

Process data analytic methods rely on the notion of sensor fusion whereby data from many sensors and alarm tags are combined with process information, such as physical connectivity of process units, to give a holistic picture of health of an integrated plant. The discovery and learning from process data refers to a set of tools and techniques for modeling and understanding of complex data sets. Such data sets generally include normal numerical (or non-categorical) data but should also take into account categorical (or non-numerical or qualitative) data from Alarm and Event (A&E) logs combined with process connectivity or topology information. The latter refers to the capture of material flow streams in process units as well information flow-paths in the process due to control loops. The emphasis in this workshop will be on tools and techniques that help in the process of understanding data and discovering information that will lead to predictive monitoring and diagnosis of process faults. The international speakers include Sirish L. Shah, who has co-authored three books, the first titled “Performance Assessment of Control Loops: Theory and Applications”, a second book titled book titled “Diagnosis of Process Nonlinearities and Valve Stiction: Data Driven Approaches” and a more recent brief monograph titled, “Capturing Connectivity and Causality in Complex Industrial Processes” and Babatunde A. Ogunnaike is the author or co-author of more than 100 peer-reviewed publications, and four books including a widely used textbook, “Process Dynamics, Modeling and Control” (1994), and “Random Phenomena: Fundamentals of Probability and Statistics for Engineers” (2009). Local speakers include Lidia Auret (Stellenbosch University, Department of Process Engineering) and Margret Bauer (honorary professor at the University of the Witwatersrand).
