2014 Southern African power system protection conference

June 18th, 2014, Published in Articles: Energize

The Southern African power system protection conference, which is held once every two years, provides a forum for discussion within the power system protection and related discipline industries; creates an opportunity for valuable exchanges of international ideas and experience; enhances the technological knowledge base of attendees; and engenders enthusiasm and stimulates interest in the subject of power system protection and related disciplines.

The 2014 conference is expected to cover the following topics:

  • Configuration management relating to IEDs and IEC 61850
  • Experiences and benefits of implementing IEC 61850
  • Application experiences of IEC 61850 sampled measured values and its impact on protection systems
  • IEC 61850 testing practices and tools
  • Experience with the practice of separating main 1 and 2 protection systems into two separate control rooms
  • Application experiences of IEDs / process interface units (PIUs) in the harsh substation environment
  • Experience (pros and cons) of utilities which have outsourced protection and control scheme commissioning and/or maintenance activities
  • Protection and control standards and practices for connection of IPPs
  • Protection and control scheme requirements, challenges and opportunities relating to the integration of a renewable power plant
  • Cyber security related to protection systems
  • Optimisation of protection and control solutions in terms of matching available technology to specific customer requirements (e.g. level of integration and simplicity to implement and support versus application)
  • Protection of networks under stressed conditions (overload and/or out-of-step, on islanded networks, during restoration, during geomagnetic storms, major incidents, etc.)
  • System protection and control systems – applications, performance and challenges (wide area protection schemes, special protection schemes, under-frequency and under-voltage load shedding schemes, transient stability schemes, out-of-step tripping schemes, wide area voltage regulation schemes, etc.)
  • Challenges in managing the life cycle of protection and control systems
  • Innovative solutions to practical problems in the protection and control environment
  • Methods for optimising education and skills development in protection and control disciplines

A communication regarding the availability of exhibition space during the three days of the conference will be sent out in due course. There is the possibility that, due to Eskom’s current business constraints, a decision might be taken to exclude the exhibition option from this year’s event. The conference programme and registration form will be published a few months before the event.

The conference is scheduled for 12-14 November 2014 in Johannesburg. Registration closes on 31 October 2014
