When I was approached  with an offer to join my best friend and her family on the Whale Trail in July, it seemed like the perfect reason to book a flight to Cape Town.

Driving from Cape Town Airport, I joined Kristy and the rest of the Hesom at a holiday home in Malgas on the banks of the Breede River. I arrived ju time for sundowners on the jetty followed by a true South African braai beer and wors. We stayed on the river for two nights, taking day-trips to local attractions, before heading off to De Hoop Nature Reserve where we were to begin our hike. On the eve of our hike we arrived at the reserve full of anticipation – the hike we had been planning for months had arrived.
