ABB technology day

All systems go!

Technology is moving at a faster rate than what companies can show at an annual event, such as the ABB technology day. If you were not familiar with robots, then you were in for a sweet treat, with a robot that served ice-cream according to your taste! The main problem at an event like this is which session to attend. John McIntosh discussed System 800xA operator effectiveness – plant-wide collaboration for increased productivity and energy effectiveness. He said that when managers or operators of a plant meet to discuss the challenges and tasks ahead, the graphic portrayal of trends, requirements and bottlenecks is essential to the identification of priorities and actions. Rather than a clunky keyboard and mouse, the solution has a smart-phone style multi-touch screen with intuitive 3 D navigation, which can interface with numerous data sources, including real-time process data streams. Another interesting presentation was by Linda Scales who gave an overview of PLCs and highlighted the safety options and the new processor developed for data applications. The new PLCs have an integrated Ethernet interface with as many as ten ports to connect remote I/Os. There was also an extensive floor show where delegates had the opportunity to look at some of the systems and interact with the product experts.
