Annual flameproof symposium held

The South African Flameproof Association (SAFA) hosted its Annual Symposium 2019 on 9 May 2019 at Carnival City Casino in Brakpan, Ekurhuleni. A total of six papers, networking breaks and a panel discussion were presented at the symposium.

The papers were presented by delegates from Digital Matters; Explolabs; Mining and Surface Certification (MASC); SALLAB Explosion Prevention and Sedna Industrial IT Solutions. Topics addressed by the papers included the introduction by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) of its Unified Marking System for Ex Equipment; mobile inspection solutions; EPA maintenance; population of EX d and EX e enclosures; the use of intrinsically safe WiFi in underground mining and the role of the ATL in the business world.

In his paper, “Marking of explosion protected equipment,” Dr Johannes Auret of SALLAB Explosion Prevention discussed the latest changes and improvements to the IEC’s explosion protection standards and noted that the latest changes are “drastic” an describe explosion protection of non-electrical Ex equipment.
