Dr. Ulrich Minnaar

Each year, Energize selects a technical article written by a local author and presents the author with the Best Technical Article Award. This year, the Best Technical Article for 2017 Award was won by Dr. Ulrich Minnaar of Eskom for his article “Power quality grid code compliance for renewable power plants” which was published in the August 2017 issue of Energize.

The article deals with the power quality compliance criteria and guidelines for renewable power plants. These became necessary to address the challenges which have accompanied the introduction of electricity generated from renewable energy sources onto the power grid.

In his article, Minnaar explains how the introduction of renewable energy-based power plants (RPPs) onto the South African electricity grid has led to many power quality challenges. These challenges have led to changes in the power quality requirements for RPPs as well as the introduction of the RPP power quality guideline laying out the process for RPPs to achieve the required compliance. These steps have led to the development of an approach which is specific to the local industry in South Africa, while taking cognisance of international best practice.

Dr. Minnaar won a Bosch GLM 100 C Professional Laser Measure.
