Construction firm cut stadium design and build times

Aecom has cut the stadium design-and-build at Jopoma Sports Complex to two years. The construction firm’s scope of work on the complex encompassed a comprehensive scheme design for all engineering and architectural services, including master planning, and a design guardianship role as the project moved into production on-site.  The Japoma Sports Complex is a 50 000 seat multi-sport stadium, an aquatics centre with an Olympic-sized pool, a 2000 seat multi-sport hall, with outdoor training facilities, transport hubs and site infrastructure. Ground was broken in 2017, with the formal opening anticipated in June 2019. With the bulk of the labour, materials, and elements having to be imported, shipping delivery lead times required precise planning and logistics. The firm’s design focused most of the services and accommodation in the West Stand, and an open concourse structure with limited envelope and building services in the other areas. Key to this structure was the double-spaced grid, which allowed many larger elements to be prefabricated in fewer components to facilitate shipping. Daily photographs and drone videos played a vital part of its technical advisor role, and virtual reality was used extensively throughout the design process.
