Developing value-added IoT solutions

April 9th, 2018, Published in Articles: EngineerIT

The internet of things (IoT) has passed its peak hype and is dictating how different sectors of the economy will operate in the not-so-distant future. The question is no longer whether industries will adopt IoT or not, but how rapidly they are wiling to digitise. The increasing demands for digitisation by a variety of industries has compelled mobile network operators to make a substantial investment in their infrastructure to support the mobile ecosystem that IoT brings. IoT demands high performing networks such as 5G that have extremely lower latency and have the ability to cater to a massive number of connections. As a pilot 5G operator, MTN believes that it is well positioned to not only support IoT adoption, but to provide value added solutions such as smart metering. The extent to which IoT solutions can be applied is limited only by the imagination. Network operators such as MTN Business are aware of the opportunities inherent in IoT and are not only supporting IoT services through their infrastructure, but are developing value added IoT solutions in the field of insurance, agriculture, manufacturing and in the retail space.
