Engineers@Leisure: The coldest of boat trips

I guess most of us have a “bucket list” of things we want to do or places we want to see while we are still boisterous and energetic enough to enjoy them to the fullest. My bucket list is primarily populated with places known for their natural beauty and remoteness. Antarctica was very high up on this list.

My opportunity to visit Antarctica arrived through a successful application to join the Space Science directorate of the South African National Space Agency (SANSA) for their summer take-over trip for 2013/2014 in the role of a volunteer assistant (aka minion). Having been accepted onto the team I only had to obtain leave from work, which was thankfully granted. Antarctica, here I come!
