Keynote speakers for GISSA Ukubuzana

GISSA and EE Publishers are proud to announce that Dr. Georg Gartner, President of the International Cartographic Association, and J Kim Fennell, Chief Executive Officer of DeCarta, have been confirmed as keynote speakers at GISSA Ukubuzana 2012, which is being held from 2 to 4 October 2012 at Emperors Palace in Kempton Park, Gauteng.

  • Dr. Gartner is a Full Professor for Cartography at the Vienna University of Technology. He holds graduate qualifications in Geography and Cartography from the University of Vienna and received his PhD and his Habilitation from the Vienna University of Technology. He was awarded a Fulbright grant to the University of Nebraska at Omaha in 1997 and a research visiting fellowship to the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology in 2000, to South China Normal University in 2006 and to the University of Nottingham in 2009.
    Dr. Gartner is Dean for Academic Affairs for Geodesy and Geoinformation at Vienna University of Technology. He is also the responsible organiser of the International Symposia on Location Based Services and TeleCartography and Editor of the Book Series “Lecture Notes on Geoinformation and Cartography” by Springer and Editor of the Journal on LBS by Taylor & Francis.

  • J Kim Fennell is the CEO of DeCarta, one of the world’s most utilised location-based services (LBS) software platforms across major local search and mapping sites, handset OEMs, and over 20 mobile operators. DeCarta’s LBS platform technology – including custom maps and geocoding, content indexing and search engine products, as well as white-label local search applications – is used by customers/developers to deploy their own branded LBS offerings. Fennell was previously CEO of Pinnacle Systems and prior to that, CEO of StorageWay, a data storage service provider. He spent much of his career at Octel Communications, from its startup stage to its acquisition by Lucent; where he established and ran its operations in Canada, Europe, and then international operations.

Plans for GISSA Ukubuzana 2012 are steaming ahead with Esri South Africa in place as the Platinum sponsor,  the SA Post Office as the Gold sponsor, and MapIT as the Silver sponser. The conference is endorsed and supported by SAGI and PLATO, the University of Pretoria, the University of Johannesburg, Stellenbosch University and the University of Cape Town.

Members of the geospatial community are encouraged to submit academic and general papers for GISSA Ukubuzana 2012. Details on the requirements and submissions can be found at the GISSA website (www.gissa.org.za). The deadline date for the submission of abstracts for general papers is 30 June 2012 and the deadline for the submission of full papers for peer-review for the academic track is also 30 June 2012. Dr. Serena Coetzee from the University of Pretoria is co-ordinating the academic paper submissions.

As many people are aware, PLATO is introducing its Continuing Professional Development (CPD) system during the course of this year.  In line with this, delegates at GISSA Ukubuzana 2012 will be awarded 1 CPD point per day of the conference.
