Prof. Saurabh Sinha

The geographical area of IEEE Region 8 includes Europe, Middle-East and Africa. In November 2011, the IEEE Board of Directors endorsed the recommendation of the IEEE Region 8 Nominations and Appointments committee; accordingly Saurabh Sinha (South Africa Section) and Costas Stasopoulos (Cyprus Section) are candidates for the 2013 – 2014 Region 8 Director-Elect position. It is once again a pleasure that a South African contestant, who led the IEEE South Africa Section in 2009 – 2010, has been nominated for this prestigious volunteer position, and the intention of this article is to encourage eligible voters to partake in the IEEE elections. The ballot will open towards mid-August, ending September 2012.

More information on the candidates is available on their websites:  and, but for the reader’s convenience information on the South African candidate is briefly provided here: Prof. Sinha is an electrical engineer, a researcher, and an educator. In 2007 he received the SAIEE (South African Institute of Electrical Engineers) Engineer of the Year Award. More recently, he received the 2010 University of Pretoria Laureate Award, the most esteemed alumni award. In 2012, Prof. Sinha will receive the international Meritorious Service Citation Award (IEEE Educational Activities Board) – to be presented at a ceremony in New Brunswick, USA in November 2012.

For more than a decade, Prof. Sinha has been with the University of Pretoria, where he currently leads the Electronics and Microelectronics Research Group at the Department of Electrical, Electronic and Computer Engineering. Together with his group, he conducts teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, research and associated management tasks. He has authored over 50 publications in peer-reviewed journals and at international conferences. Prof. Sinha is the managing editor of the SAIEE Africa Research Journal.

Beyond his academic contributions, Prof. Sinha serves as an industrial consultant for Business Enterprises at University of Pretoria, and is engaged with a number of large-scale regional and international research projects; among others he is currently leading an on-chip energy harvesting project.

Prof. Sinha has been active in IEEE leadership at section, regional and global levels. As Region 8 vice-chair for Technical Activities (2011 – present), he has succeeded in bringing higher levels of the IEEE much closer to Region 8 committees for technical chapters, conferences, standards, industry activities, educational activities and publications-related activities. In this way he has strategically developed Region 8 volunteer leadership, enabling higher quality member engagement at grassroots level.
