Keynote speaker line-up for Geomatics Indaba 2016

Mmuso Riba, South Africa’s Chief Surveyor General, Rob Mahoney from the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), and Gary Gale, the Chief Technology Officer for What3words, will form part of the keynote speaker line-up at Geomatics Indaba 2016.

Riba, who was recently appointed as head of the South African Geomatics Council, will address the issue of “Geomatics skills and technologies: Growing professionals to secure our future”, which is the theme of this year’s annual gathering of the South African geomatics industry. Mahoney will be speaking on the future of the geomatics profession and how to prepare for the challenges ahead, and geocoding expert Gale will be talking about geocoding, mapping and future trends.

Outlined below are some further details on the keynote speakers for this year’s Geomatics Indaba:

  • Mmuso Riba from the Department of Rural Development and Land Reform is South Africa’s Chief Surveyor General. He holds a BSc Degree in Mathematics and Chemistry as well as a BSc in Surveying from the University of Cape Town. He is a Professional Land Surveyor as well as a Sectional Titles Practitioner. A former Surveyor-General for the Free State, he is a board member of the Council for Geoscience and the South African National Space Agency. He is also the chairperson of the Committee for Spatial Information and the South African Geomatics Council.
  • Rob Mahoney has extensive experience in the management of land information, and land registration (cadastre) systems, together with the associated technologies and business processes. He has held positions on a number of important national and international committees including: Vice President of Comité de Liaison des Géomètres Européens (CLGE), and the UK government’s Geographic Information Panel. He has represented RICS at meetings with the World Bank in Washington, the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) in Rome and addressed the Westminster All Party Parliamentary Group on Agriculture and Food for Development. He is a Fellow of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), and a Fellow of the British Cartographic Society. He has recently completed a six year term of office as RICS Honorary Secretary.
  • Gary Gale is the Chief Technology Officer for What3words. He is a geotechnologist and self-confessed map addict, with over 25 years’ experience in the mapping and location space. In previous roles he has worked for the BBC World Service, the European Space Agency and Reuters. He has also held the positions of Director of Engineering for Yahoo! Geotechnologies; Director of Places for Ovi, Nokia and HERE Maps; Geotechnologist-in-residence for Lokku, founding the OpenCage geocoder; and prior to joining What3words, he was Head of APIs for the UK’s Ordnance Survey. He is also a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society.

Due to the local government elections falling on 3 August 2016, Geomatics Indaba has been re-scheduled to 12 and 13 September 2016, with a Field Training Day on 14 September 2016. The paper programme, training workshops and exhibition will be held at Emperors Palace in Ekurhuleni while the Field Training Day will be held at Transnet’s Esselenpark School of Rail
in Ekurhuleni.

The programme for the Field Trainig Day is in the process of being finalised and all members of the geomatics community wishing to participate in the training day are encouraged to submit their ideas as soon as possible.
