Keynote speakers confirmed for Geomatics Indaba 2016

Chief Surveyor General Mmuso Riba, Statistician General Pali Lehohla, Rob Mahoney from the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), and Gary Gale, the Chief Technology Officer for What3words, have all confirmed their participation as keynote speakers at Geomatics Indaba 2016.

Hosted by the Geo-Information Society of South Africa (GISSA), the Institute of Mine Surveyors of South Africa (IMSSA), the South African Geomatics Institute (SAGI), and EE Publishers, the indaba is scheduled to take place at Emperors Palace in Ekurhuleni on 12 and 13 September 2016, with a field training day set to take place at Transnet’s Esselenpark School of Rail, also in Ekurhuleni, on 14 September 2016.

Riba, who chairs the South African Geomatics Council, will address the issue of “Geomatics skills and technologies: Growing professionals to secure our future”, which is the theme of this year’s annual gathering of the South African geomatics industry. Lehohla will be speaking on the topic of spatial data, place and addresses and the vital role that these can play in facilitating South Africa’s economic development and the well-being of its citizens. Mahoney will be speaking on the future of the geomatics profession and how to prepare for the challenges ahead, and geocoding expert Gale will be talking about geocoding, mapping and future trends.

Mmuso Riba

Mmuso Riba

Mmuso Riba from the Department of Rural Development and Land Reform is South Africa’s Chief Surveyor General. He holds a BSc Degree in Mathematics and Chemistry as well as a BSc in Surveying from the University of Cape Town. He is a Professional Land Surveyor as well as a Sectional Titles Practitioner. A former Surveyor-General for the Free State, he is a board member of the Council for Geoscience and the South African National Space Agency. He is also the chairperson of the Committee for Spatial Information and the South African Geomatics Council.

 

Pali Lehohla

Pali Lehohla

Dr. Pali Lehohla is the Statistician General of South Africa, a position he has held since November 2000.  He is the chair of the Africa Symposium for Statistical Development (ASSD), a country led initiative established in 2006 which aims to put statistical evidence at the centre of policy in Africa.  Between 2005 and 2010 he served in a variety of portfolios. He was chair of the United Nations Statistics Commission, chair of Statistics Commission Africa and also chair of PARIS21 a global partnership for statistical development in the 21st Century.  He is also the  chair for the Sub-Group on Harmonization of Statistics in Africa.  In addition Lehohla has served as an advisor to in-conflict, post-conflict and fragile political environments.

 

Rob Mahoney

Rob Mahoney

Rob Mahoney has extensive experience in the management of land information, and land registration (cadastre) systems, together with the associated technologies and business processes. He has held positions on a number of important national and international committees including: Vice President of Comité de Liaison des Géomètres Européens (CLGE), and the UK government’s Geographic Information Panel. He has represented RICS at meetings with the World Bank in Washington, the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) in Rome and addressed the Westminster All Party Parliamentary Group on Agriculture and Food for Development. He is a Fellow of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), and a Fellow of the British Cartographic Society. He has recently completed a six year term of office as RICS Honorary Secretary.

 

Gary Gale

Gary Gale

Gary Gale is the Chief Technology Officer for What3words. He is a geotechnologist and self-confessed map addict, with over 25 years’ experience in the mapping and location space. In previous roles he has worked for the BBC World Service, the European Space Agency and Reuters. He has also held the positions of Director of Engineering for Yahoo! Geotechnologies; Director of Places for Ovi, Nokia and HERE Maps; Geotechnologist-in-residence for Lokku, founding the OpenCage geocoder; and prior to joining What3words, he was Head of APIs for the UK’s Ordnance Survey. He is also a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society.
