MOVITRAC LTP-B standard inverter: perfect all-rounder for field applications

When an expanding South African e-commerce company needed a logistics upgrade at its Johannesburg depot, drive engineering company SEW-Eurodrive rose to the occasion with its MOVITRAC LTP-B standard inverter, the perfect all-rounder for field applications.

The conveying and packaging logistics expansion entailed the installation of additional conveyor belts. SEW-Eurodrive supplied the automation package, including mechanical gearboxes and variable-speed drives (VSDs), to cope with growing demand at the depot.

SEW-Eurodrive mechatronics representative Rudie Venter says the gearboxes supplied in the solution are imported from Germany, but the client required a local company to design the automation panels.

As part of the solution, a total of 98 MOVITRAC LTP-B inverters and accessories were supplied. Most VSDs are shipped with individual Profinet communications cards, but SEW-Eurodrive provided a communications gateway to which a total of eight drives can be connected at the same time, reducing installation cost dramatically. Without the gateway, the installation would have required 98 costly Profinet cards.

The gateway communicates with the central system (e.g. SCADA) and provides feedback on aspects such as whether the drives are running and their physical locations, as well as feedback from limit switches along the conveyor.

The standard inverters of the MOVITRAC LTP-B series drives are matched to meet the requirements outside the control cabinet. These inverters are developed for open-loop speed control of asynchronous and synchronous motors without encoder, and are economical in conveyor applications, hoists, fans and pumps.

MOVITRAC LTP-B is available in six sizes with power ratings from 0,75 to 160 kW and is suited for use in dusty and humid environments. As an alternative, inverters for installation in the control cabinet in the power range from 0,75 to 15 kW are available with IP20 ingress protection.

The VSDs installed at the project, currently in its final commissioning stage, are for torque and speed control in the conveyor application. These drives, with their simple set-up, are DIN rail-mounted, which negates the need for drilling and screws during installation and reduces installation time as well as maintenance requirements drastically.

While this particular project only required a drive with IP20 protection, which means it can be installed in a standalone cabinet to protect it against the ingress of dust and water, a fully-protected IP65 protection rated version is also available for more arduous requirements and applications.

Venter explains that the advantages of the MOVITRAC LTP-B units installed at the expansion project include ramp-up and ramp-down to extend the lifespan of the gear unit by limiting inrush currents, which damage the motor windings. This increases the lifespan of the motor and the gear unit. The motors used at the project are IE3 premium efficiency.

The MOVITRAC LTP-B offers IP55/NEMA 12k housing protection; a keypad for easy startup; integrated EMC filter for 230 and 400 V; “Safe Torque Off” safety function according to EN ISO 13849-1 PL d; V/f, VFC and VFC Torque motor control modes; overload capacity up to 175% and integrated PID controller. Process data exchange is via fieldbus connection with Profibus DP, Profinet, Powerlink, EtherCAT, EtherNet/IP, DeviceNet, BACnet, CANopen, and Modbus RTU directly in the inverter or, optionally, via DFx gateway.
