Industrial plugs and sockets manufacturer and supplier Ampco unveiled the AMPCO Gen 2 plastic plug and connector range to the commercial, mining and industrial sectors across Africa. The launch took place on 17 October 2019 during a press conference at the Roodepoort, Johannesburg head office of its sister company, Powermite.

Powermite director Donovan Marks said the motivation behind the introduction of this the range stems from the companies’ mandate to expand and add extra value to its locally manufactured metal and plastic range.

“We are extremely proud to offer these innovations, which are poised to set the benchmark in robustness, efficiency and performance.” He said the new products are competitively priced to benefit customers. This, he said, is possible as the AMPCO Gen 2 connector range “maximises their productivity potential cost-effectively.”

The plastic range is made from Polyamide 6 and PC/ABS. According to Marks, these virgin grade plastic materials provide enhanced benefits such as impact resistance combined with high robustness; high thermal stability (self-extinguishing); great insulating qualities, high disruptive strength and others, including UV resistance to ISO 4892-2.

The plug and socket range is standardised by the International Electrotechnical Commission to IEC 60309-1 and IEC 60309-2 equivalent to the European Norms EN 60309 parts 1 and 2.

The material is said to deliver excellent resistance to chemicals and is free from cadmium and halogen. The IP44 & IP67 rated Gen 2 range is suited to arduous applications where portable electrical equipment is used, including electric motor driven and heating machinery, welding and emergency generator supplies, among others.

The AMPCO Gen 2 plastic range is offered in screwless quick connect and standard screw terminal connecting, and includes 16 – 125 A industrial plugs and sockets; connectors; plastic cable extension reels (the XREEL); heavy-duty engineering plastic site distribution boxes with socket outlets; rubber distribution combination boxes; couplers; wall and 16 – 125 A flanged sockets; switched interlocked sockets and an inline portable protection device.

The company also launched the AMPCO Gen 2 heavy-duty engineering plastic and rubber site distribution boxes with socket outlets and the PRCD-S+ 30 mA (at 230 V) earth leakage.

“We are confident that these products will play a key role in customers achieving their productivity and profitability goals,” said Marks.
