Sand for Durban’s beaches
A sand pumping initiative between eThekwini Municipality and the Transnet National Ports Authority has reinstated sand along eroded sections of Durban’s Golden Mile. The initiative addresses beach erosion exacerbated by climate change and inclement weather and involves deploying one of the municipality’s dredging vessels, the Ilembe. Sand collected during routine harbour dredging is discharged directly onto the beach via a floating under-sea pipeline. Private contractors Subtech and Katlantic managed the positioning of the pipeline under guidance of an expert from Royal IHC, the Netherlands-based builders of the Ilembe. To date, 74 000 m3 of sand has been replenished in this area and 194 000 m3 of sand was dredged across the initial beaches.
