This year Model Maker Systems is celebrating its 30th year in business. The company was founded in August 1989 by Carel Viljoen and Ben van den Heever, who worked independently on similar software solutions since 1984 without knowing about one another’s work. Late in 1985 they started working together to provide a bureau service to surveyors, engineers and contractors by doing calculations for them using their own software. Once clients gained confidence in what the software could do, they started asking about buying it. Today the company has nearly 4000 clients in over 83 countries using its software products which include Model Maker, Road Maker, Pipe Maker, Survey Maker and Point Cloud Viewer. Model Maker, with its extensive survey data, CAD and design functionality is used by land- and technical surveyors, civil-, mining- and irrigation engineers and roads and earthworks contractors. Road Maker is used for the design and quantification of all types of roads. Survey Maker’s main focus is on cadastral land survey needs, while Point Cloud Viewer was developed to convert point cloud data into more manageable data for conventional DTM software like Model Maker. In 2018 the company has embarked on a new development project to create a single package with functionality from all the existing products, with testing expected to start in early 2020.
