Over the course of the weekend of 13 to 14 April 2019, 25 top honours and final-year students from five leading universities from around the country took part in the 24-hours hackathon to conceptualise, design and build an actuarial model.

They took on the challenge of developing a predictive customer retention programme for MiWay insurance – all within 24 hours from concept to building a focused customer retention programme from supplied data.

The winners with their prizes.

For the students, the hackathon was an opportunity to test their financial modelling skills against that of students with similar capabilities. For MiWay, the focus is on finding the best skills for taking the company into the future which is becoming increasingly technical and focused on producing complex, mathematically-based solutions for the financial services sector.

The top prize of R20 000 went to the Matt Lourens and Dehan Opperman from North-West University, Master students in business analytics/data mining. Christian Hitchcock, from the University of Pretoria, was the runner-up and won R5000, and Lebogang Moremi, also from UP won the third prize and R3000.
