Terrain lenses in aid of topography understanding

Virtual Surveyor’s six new Terrain Lenses in Version 6.3 of its drone surveying and mapping software enhance different aspects of the terrain in 3D to give users a better understanding of the topography mapped with an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). The software enables surveyors to generate accurate topographic end products from UAV data, bridging the gap between UAV photogrammetric processing software and engineering design packages. Instantly applied with a single click or shortcut, the lenses can be used alone or in combination. The six lenses include the Hill Shade, Contours, the Slope Steepness, and two Transparent lenses. Designed a lidar-created digital surface model without an underlying ortho, the Hill Shade lens simulates sun illumination casting shadows on the scene and enhances 3D perception of hills, valleys and other relief. The Contours lens helps to trace the route water would take as it flows through the terrain, while the Slope Steepness lens colourises the slopes to highlight breaklines. Elevation lens automatically colourises the terrain so that the same elevations appear in the same colours, giving the user an easy understanding of the highs and lows of the landscape.
