airshow-123-03-2015-620x559The Geomatics Indaba UAV Airshow 2015 is being held on 10 August 2015 at the Barnstormers Model Flying Club in Ekurhuleni. The event will showcase a diverse range of UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles) with manufacturers and service providers on hand to explain how the various UAVs are assembled, operated and used for accurate data collection. The Geomatics Indaba UAV Airshow 2015 is intended to educate and inform the surveying, GIS and geospatial market on how to make best use of this emerging technology.

Various types and makes of UAVs will be exhibited at the UAV Airshow, and there will be demonstrations on the necessary safety-check procedures, practical demonstrations of take-off and landing procedures, as well as flying and data capturing capabilities. Exhibitors will explain what applications their products are best suited for and delegates are encouraged to use this opportunity to educate and inform themselves on how to professionally incorporate UAV technology offerings into their current work practices.

While it is anticipated that the South African Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS) Regulations will be promulgated before August  2015, it is not certain whether the RPA personnel licencing procedures will be in place. To ensure that the Geomatics Indaba UAV Airshow 2015 complies with the South African regulatory and legislative environment, it is being organised under the rules of the South African Model Aircraft Association (SAMAA). All pilots flying on the day will need to be SAMAA licensed and the pilots will need to have a SAMAA solo rating. (Arrangements have been made to assist pilots with meeting these requirements.)

Organised by the South African Geomatics Institute (SAGI), the Institute of Mine Surveyors of Southern Africa (IMSSA) and the Geo-Information Society of South Africa (GISSA), in partnership with EE Publishers, the UAV Airshow will take place prior to Geomatics Indaba 2015 which is scheduled for 11, 12 and 13 August 2015 at Emperors Palace, Johannesburg.
