Win a sponsored trip to Geomatics Indaba 2015

sagi-logoThe South African Geomatics Institute (SAGI), in response to a skills-development challenge from the Department of Rural Development and Land Reform,  has decided to sponsor five individuals (by way of a competition) to attend Geomatics Indaba 2015. Flights, transport, accommodation and delegate fees will be covered for the five delegates sponsored by SAGI, in addition to a daily subsistence allowance for the duration of the conference.

Geomatics Indaba 2015 is organised by South Africa’s professional geospatial bodies, the Geo-Information Society of South Africa (GISSA), the South African Geomatics Institute (SAGI),  and the Institute of Mine Surveyors of Southern Africa (IMSSA), in partnership with EE Publishers. It  is being held from 11 to 13 August 2015 at Emperors Palace in Ekurhuleni, Gauteng ( The conference is preceded by the Geomatics Indaba – UAV Airshow 2015 on 10 August 2015.

GISSA, IMSSA and EE Publishers have also responded to the challenge set by the department and have approached selected universities across South Africa to nominate students who will be challenged and inspired by the opportunity to attend Geomatics Indaba 2015. Details regarding GISSA and IMSSA’s sponsored students will be published in a future edition of PositionIT.

Competition details

Eligibility: You must either be a surveyor / land surveyor-in-training or a surveying / land surveying student at a PLATO recognised institution.

The competition entails writing a three page article/letter (1500 words) on any of the following subject matters or combination of subject matters.

  • Issues young people face in the Geomatics industry.
  • The future of Geomatics.
  • Any issues on professionalism and ethics in the Geomatics industry.
  • The relevance of Geomatics in the modern world.

Articles should include your name, academic institution or PLATO number as well as your contact details. (The email subject line must state “GI2015 Competition” to be considered).

Articles / letters will be evaluated by a SAGI committee. Winning articles / letters may be published in PositionIT. Prizes are not transferable or reimbursable for cash.

The closing date for entries is 29 June 2015.
