Zimbabwean geomatics institute holds smart cities conference

The Zimbabwe Institute of Geomatics (ZIG) convened and hosted the Smart Cities Conference 2019 in September 2019 under the theme “Enhancing the optimal quality and performance of urban services through geomatics”. ZIG president Wilson Mhuri welcomed delegates from government, business enterprises and citizens. The Minister of Local Government, Public Works and National Housing, July Moyo’s keynote address was delivered by the chief director of spatial planning and development. Local experts in surveying, geomatics, real estate, spatial planning, education, construction, environment and local government sectors delivered presentations on smart cities. Comparative learning, benchmarking and lived experiences were delivered by counterparts from Botswana and South Africa. Local and international companies also exhibited smart city technologies that are available on the market. After panel and plenary discussions, a land delivery value chain task force of was set up to draft short, medium and long-term strategies for the implementation of the smart city concepts for the sustainable development of Zimbabwe. ZIG will coordinate this process.
