The World Economic Forum’s 2018 Future jobs report has estimated that; thanks to new industrial technologies; 75 million jobs will be lost in the years leading up to 2022 – and 133 million new ones will sprout in their place. But what jobs are these, and what are countries doing to prepare their citizens for these new jobs? That is the question we will answer at the 2019 edition of the Industry 4.0 Summit, after the hugely successful inaugural event last September. While the first summit sought to outline the principles of the latest revolution in manufacturing, this year’s event will explore further how Africa as a developing continent can leverage new industrial technology to add manufacturing to its list of industries; since Africa is known for primarily exporting mainly raw materials, it would be a boon for its working population if organisations expanded the job market by opening more manufacturing companies and adding value to raw materials. Besides, with technology getting smarter with each passing day, it would be wise for organisations in developing countries to stay abreast with the trends which will keep them competitive on the market. That would mean current generations getting acquainted with the new technology and being able to prepare future generations for the coming disruption. After all, it has been said that the jobs our children will do might not even exist yet! But it is today’s education that has to prepare the future worker, and it needs to be done right.
