Every day there are new reports of data breaches, cyber-attacks and security bugs affecting IT services and applications. Despite having the necessary security measures in place, the public and private sectors are still at high risk of being attacked by cybercriminals, mainly due to human error.

Now in its third year, the Cyber Security Symposium Africa (CSSA) is an annual event that brings together those in the security sector to share knowledge and ideas and identify possible collaborations. The symposium is proudly sponsored by Dimension Data, Cisco and Maxtec.

This year’s theme brings into focus that cybersecurity, often mischaracterised as an IT responsibility, is a shared responsibility and a risk that affects us all. Key experts from various sectors, who work in the security field, will share their knowledge and experiences addressing information and cybersecurity-related matters and provide guidance to those in attendance on how to effectively manage their own cybersecurity strategies. CSSA 2019 therefore hopes to show that by working together we can combat this ongoing risk.

Training Course on “The Use of Radioactive Isotopes for Industrial Measurement”

Date: 28 August 2019 – 29 August 2019
Type of event: Seminar
Time: 08:00 – 16:30
Venue: The Oaklands Inn & Conference Centre
Address: 236A Oak Avenue, Ferndale, Randburg, Johannesburg
Website: Click here

Radioactive isotopes are used extensively for measuring process variables and for determining soil density and moisture. Instruments, utilising radioactive sources in measuring systems, use the absorption principle of the radiation to determine a number of process properties. Despite the relatively small activity of the radioactive isotopes used in industrial measuring systems, misuse or damage can lead to serious injury or even fatality. In order to control the use of radioactive isotopes the Department of National Health brought the Hazardous Substances Act into operation in 1973 and its amendments in 1993. This act lays down procedures for the possession and use of radioactive isotopes. This seminar is designed to equip the participants with an understanding of radioactive sources, their application, safe use and what to do in the case of an incident. The course will also cover the legal requirements for the appointment of radiation protection officers, and the administrative procedures and records required for obtaining, possessing or disposing of radioactive sources. Delegates will be issued with a certificate of attendance which is accepted by the Department of Health as evidence of training for Radiation Protection Officers. This course is aimed at people involved in the management, use or maintenance of measuring equipment containing radioactive sources. It is essential for those people who are, or will be, responsible for ensuring the safe use of radioactive sources, i.e. Radiation Protection Officers or Acting RPOs.
The payment of the course fee is R 4 800 ,– per delegate (R 5 520,- incl. VAT.) This includes course manuals, handouts, lunches, teas, parking and certificates. Payment with application or registration. No admission without prior payment.
