The cannabis judgement: implications for the electrical contractor

In September 2018, the Constitutional Court delivered a judgement which effectively declared Section 4(b) of the Drugs Act unconstitutional and, therefore, invalid to the extent that it prohibits the use or possession of cannabis by an adult in private for that adult’s personal consumption in private. Section 5(b) of the Drugs Act was constitutionally invalid […]

Parental leave to include employees who adopt children

The current family responsibility leave provisions in the Main Collective Agreement in the electrical contracting industry provide as follows: “During each leave cycle, an employee shall be entitled to a period of three days’ paid leave which may be taken When the employee’s child is born. When the employee’s child is sick. In the event […]

Can you discipline an employee who has resigned?

An employer discovers wrongdoing on the part of an employee and seeks to discipline them. Upon receiving notice of the employer’s intention, the employee elects to resign rather than to face disciplinary action. The employee purports to resign with immediate effect and fails to honour the notice period in terms of their contract of employment. […]

The history of the Wiring Code and how it applies to old installations

In South Africa, there have been four Wiring Codes since 1922, which influence the interpretation and application of the rules in today’s code of practice. This is important when considering the statement on page 3 of SANS 10142-1 Edition 2: “The edition of the standard that was applicable at the date of erection of an […]

Ten things to know about electric power cable

The tables of current rating of electric cables, as published by cable manufacturers, give the value of “standard current rating”. This is the maximum safe continuous current that the cable can carry under standard conditions. In South Africa, the standard conditions assume an air temperature of 30°C; that the cables are shaded from the sun; […]

Can a withdrawn employment offer amount to dismissal?

An offer of employment creates a valid contract and a later withdrawal of that offer can amount to dismissal, especially where the reasons for the withdrawal of the offer are unreasonable. The Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) considered this issue in the case of Young vs. the Barnes Group (2017). Wayne Young applied […]

Toets ‘n Bakkie: Hilux on a High

Toets ‘n Bakkie: The improved JMC

I eventually managed to get hold of the JMC Vigus 5 4×4. I mentioned in previous reports that bakkies manufactured in China had improved dramatically since they were first introduced to the South African market, and so did the JMC Vigus 5, which follows in the footsteps of the Vigus 4. The Vigus is powered […]

Certificate of Compliance series Part 13

The ECA(SA) has developed an electronic Certificate of Compliance (e-CoC) to meet the needs of the electrical contracting industry in South Africa. The e-CoC simplifies the tasks of completing, storing and retrieving CoCs. To make going digital even easier, the ECA provides members with five free samples for testing purposes. For your free samples, contact […]

COVID-19 CORONA VIRUS
SOUTH AFRICAN RESOURCE PORTAL

What is COVID-19?
On 31 December 2019, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported a cluster of pneumonia cases in Wuhan City, China.
‘Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2’ (SARS-CoV-2) was confirmed as the causative agent of what we now know as ‘Coronavirus Disease 2019’ (COVID-19).
Since then, the virus has spread to more than 100 countries, including South Africa.
