Oral agreements for building and related work a potential minefield

Oral agreements for electrical installation work are, theoretically, legal but they frequently cause problems. An oral agreement between an employer and an electrical contractor to undertake certain work based on discussions between the two parties – sometimes a drawing or a job description – is acceptable providing nothing goes wrong. When things do go […]

Certificate of Compliance series Part 12

This series of articles was compiled by the ECA to clarify some misconceptions in the field and to ensure that members are better equipped to issue CoCs. The documents referred to in this part are: The Occupational Health and Safety Act, No 85 of 1993 (OHS Act). The Electrical Installation Regulations of 2009 (EIR). SANS […]

Contractors’ Q&A

In this Q&A article, we publish members’ questions and answers by the East/South Cape Regional Executive Committee, shared here for the benefit of the electrical contracting industry in South Africa. Can I replace a 36 W ballast with a 58 W ballast? No because, although the light will work with the oversized ballast, the lamps […]

Toets ‘n bakkie: Ford Ranger goes even greener

Ford has launched its new Hi Tech single and Bi-Turbo two-litre Ranger bakkie. I remember that, when VW introduced the Amarok, most motor journalists were quite skeptical and quotes like “only cold drinks and milk come in two litres” abounded. I was also a bit sceptical about the durability of this “small” engine in the […]

Toets ‘n Bakkie: Jiangling Motor Company celebrates ten years

The Jiangling Motor Company celebrated ten years since the first import of a JMC vehicle into South Africa. To celebrate this event, they launched two upgraded models, the JMC Vigus 5 and the 6-tonne Carrying Plus. The event took place at the Centurion Conference Centre in Gauteng. I did not realise there are so many […]

Frequently-asked questions from East/South Cape region

Lucas Bowles of the East/South Cape region prepares periodic FAQs in which members’ questions are answered by the East/South Cape regional executive committee and shared for the benefit of the broader electrical contracting industry in South Africa. At the East/South Cape regional meeting in February, a member objected to the “type of questions” in the […]

Certificate of Compliance series Part 11

The ECA compiled this series of articles to clarify some misconceptions in the field and to ensure that members are better equipped to do their work, particularly when issuing CoCs. The Test Report, section 4, Inspection and Tests In this part of the series we provide guidance on the completion of the Tests in section […]

Does social media have a role to play in the workplace?

Social media has become the most commonly used means of communication as it is the most convenient. With the use of mobile phones, communication by social media and messaging services is instant, which makes it convenient. This raises the question of what role social media has within the workplace. As much as social media is […]

The ECA compiled this series of articles to clarify some misconceptions in the field, and to ensure that its members are better equipped to do their work, particularly when issuing CoCs. The Test Report Section 4 – Inspection and Tests – Part 3 In this part, we will conclude the detailed discussion of the inspection […]

Ten things you should know about electrical power cable

The tables of current rating of electric cables give the value of “standard current rating”. This is the maximum safe continuous current that the cable can carry under standard conditions. In South Africa, the standard conditions assume an air temperature of 30°C; that the cables are shaded from the sun; that the maximum soil temperature […]

SOUTH AFRICAN RESOURCE PORTAL

What is COVID-19?
On 31 December 2019, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported a cluster of pneumonia cases in Wuhan City, China.
